Project Overview

From problem framing to results — how the case study came together.

01

Problem Statement

Students juggle notes, flashcards, planners, and AI tools across many apps — losing context and time. StudyGenie brings planning, spaced repetition, and AI tutoring into one calm workspace.

02

Research

Surveyed 42 students and interviewed 6 across undergrad and grad programs to understand study rhythms, procrastination triggers, and how they already use AI.

03

User Personas

The 'Overwhelmed Undergrad' who needs structure, and the 'Focused Grad' who needs a fast, distraction-free AI reference for long study sessions.

04

User Flow

Onboarding → syllabus import → weekly plan → daily focus session → AI chat within a topic → review & progress. Each step is skippable to avoid friction.

05

Wireframes

Explored a Notion-style workspace vs. a focused split view. The split view (plan on the left, session on the right) won for keeping students in flow.

06

Visual Design

Warm, low-contrast surfaces reduce eye strain during long sessions; a single accent color highlights the next action without shouting.

07

Design System

Typography scale tuned for long-form reading, a compact component set (task, card, chat bubble, streak), and dark-mode-first tokens.

08

High Fidelity Screens

Hero, dashboard, planner, and AI workspace showcase the end-to-end study experience.

09

Prototype

An interactive prototype walks through a full study session including AI-assisted explanation and quiz generation.

10

Results

In a moderated study with 8 students, task completion for weekly planning improved from 61% to 94% and average time-to-first-action dropped by 38%.

11

Key Learnings

Students trust AI more when it references their own material. Progress visualization must feel encouraging, not judgmental — small wins compound.
